Erzurum, Turkey – Asli Nemutlu, a young member of Turkey’s national alpine ski team, was killed in a crash while training Thursday at the Konaklı ski resort near the city of Erzurum in the country’s east.
Nemutlu, 18, reportedly fell and slid for some distance, fracturing her neck in the incident. Initial reports indicate that Nemutlu lost a ski, but it’s unclear if the ski’s binding released unexpectedly or if the ski came off in a fall.
Members of the team were at Konaklı to train for the Turkey Youth Ski Championship, set for this weekend.
Nemutlu was transported following the incident to the Erzurum Training and Research Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The decorated young racer, who had skied since the age of 3, was a technical specialist, excelling in slalom and giant slalom.
