Park City Tries Creative Measures to Induce Snowfall

Park City, UT – It’s no secret that snowfall has been a scarce commodity thus far this winter in many regions across the U.S. The story in Utah is no different, and officials at one of the state’s ski resorts will try a novel technique tomorrow to summon the snow gods.

Park City Mountain Resort will host a traditional Native American blessing ceremony to encourage snowfall and moisture for Mother Earth. The ceremony begins at high noon on Saturday in the Resort Plaza and will be performed by members of the Northern Ute Tribe.

The Snow Blessing ceremony will include a prayer led by Frank Arrowchis in English, followed by a prayer led by Spiritual Leader, Albert Lance Manning, in Ute and will conclude with a traditional Native American song and dance performance. During the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay, Arrowchis led a similar ceremony at Arches National Park to bless the Olympic Flame.

Guests and attendees are invited to participate in the Snow Blessing ceremony and are encouraged to commit to their part by fasting until after the ceremony. After the ceremony, complimentary snow-themed refreshments will be served.
