Kearney Remains Unstoppable in Moguls

Lake Placid, NY – Olympic Champion Hannah Kearney, of Norwich, Vt., won a record 11th consecutive FIS Freestyle World Cup moguls event with victory at the USANA Freestyle Cup at Whiteface Mountain on Thursday. The title elevates Kearney past Switzerland’s Conny Kissling for the longest Freestyle World Cup win streak. World Champion Patrick Deneen, of Cle Elum, Wash., earned his first podium of the season, finishing second behind Mikael Kingsbury of Canada in the men’s event, who continued a winning streak of his own and capped a three-medal day for Canada.

Kearney earned the gold with a score of 23.52, her 12th straight World Cup victory as Canadian Justine Dufour-Lapointe of Montreal, age 17,  earned her third-straight silver medal with 22.85.  Nikola Sudova of the Czech Republic was third at 22.78. Heather McPhie, of Bozeman, Mont, narrowly missed landing on the podium and finished fourth.

Weather hampered moguls training, but the Whiteface crew put in tremendous effort for a successful event.

“The first two days of training were incredibly tough. Luckily I’m from Vermont and I’m used to crazy conditions,” said Kearney. “I had no idea there was a record to be broken. I didn’t know until the finish area today so I’m really excited about that. I know records are just a piece of data but it’s a testament to consistency.”

Kearney’s historic win streak began January 21, 2011, also in Lake Placid. Thursday’s victory was the 16th individual World Cup moguls win of her career.

Thursday’s men’s moguls victory was the fourth consecutive trip to the top of the podium for Kingsbury, of Deux Montagnes, Quebec. Kingsbury took the top spot in the men’s super final with a score of 25.32, followed by Deneen at 24.00. Philippe Marquis took the bronze with a score of 21.86, the first World Cup podium for the 21 year-old from Quebec City, Canada. Jeremy Cota, of Carrabassett Valley, Maine, narrowly missed the podium with fourth.

All six members of the Canadian men’s team made it to the finals. Alex Bilodeau of Rosemere, Quebec, finished the day in fifth; Marc-Antoine Gagnon of Terrebonne, Quebec, was sixth; Eddie Hicks of Langley, British Columbia was ninth and Cedric Rochon of St. Sauveur, Quebec, rounded out the Canadian men in 16th spot.

Scott Rawles, Moguls Head Coach of the U.S. Ski Team, was also pleased with his squad’s results, with four U.S. skiers finishing in the top eight as 12 made the finals.

“We had a great day today; we had eight women make the final and four men. We were in contention for four podiums and got two, so I’m super stoked on that,” Rawles said.  “With Hannah winning 11 in a row, she’s doing historical things, and with good showings from our new skiers, we have a lot to look forward to both next week in Calgary and the following week in Deer Valley, Utah.”
