Bozeman, MT – Separate power outages on Sunday caused two ski resorts to suspend operations in the western U.S.
A 10:40 a.m. outage near Bozeman, Mont., darkened the entire canyon leading to Bridger Bowl ski area on Sunday, ski area officials indicate. Back-up power was used to evacuate chairlifts, but with no power available for the resort’s lodges and other amenities resort officials elected to close the mountain for the day before power was restored to the area around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Skiers and riders were also frustrated on Sunday in Colorado, where the lights went out at Copper Mountain at around 11:30 a.m. All ski lifts at the resort were halted until auxiliary power allowed resort officials to empty the chairs after an average 45-minute delay.
All patrons stuck on chairlifts at Copper Mountain on Sunday were given a free lift ticket voucher. Power was restored around 3 p.m., and in the intervening hours the resort operated only four of its 21 lifts.
Different companies supply power to the two affected resorts, and the outages were unrelated.
