Soldeu-Grandvalaria, Andorra –Relentless high winds across the Pyrenees Mountains canceled the first of two Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom races scheduled for today in the small Andorran village of Soldeu.
Overnight gusts hit 100 miles per hour, destroying banners and lifting finish tents into the nearby Valira d’Orient river. The race was delayed for two and a half hours before the jury cancellation. It would have been the first World Cup staged in Andorra.
The race was a make-up for the Dec. 17 giant slalom that was canceled after three feet of snow fell in Courchevel, France. A second giant slalom remains on the schedule for Saturday with slalom on Sunday.
