Huntsville, UT –Sandy, Utah’s Louie Vito won the Dew Tour on Saturday night with its highest-ever score of 98.0, and in the process became the first superpipe athlete to win consecutive Dew Cups.
Vito has been consistent on the tour this season, finishing second in two previous stops but landed on the top of the podium for the first time in his home state. Vito trailed Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov heading into the final run before his record-setting score.
“I don’t pay attention to scores. I’m just trying to put down the run that I’m happy with and have the riders around me push me,” said Vito. “I get tired of being second. I’m stoked to be consistent but I wanted to at least get on top of the podium this year. I did, and what better place than where I’m living now in Utah, at the Toyota Championships, to walk away with the Dew Cup.”
U.S. Snowboarding Rookie Spencer Shaw, of Stratton Mountain, Vt., finished third for a personal best thanks to a huge frontside 1440 tailgrab, the first time he had ever done the trick.
“That was the first time I’ve ever done that run and a 14,” Shaw said. “My heart was pounding so hard at the top of the pipe, and it all worked out, I’m so excited. I’ve never tried it before. Right before I dropped in, my coach was like, ‘Why don’t you try that?’ and I was like, ‘Ok,’ and I dropped in and it worked out well.”
Halfpipe snowboarders now head to the TTR 6Star World Snowboarding Championships next week in Oslo, Norway.
