Tudegesheva and Prommegger Win Parallel Giant Slalom World Cup at Stoneham

Stoneham (QC), Canada – Ekaterina Tudegesheva of Russia, and Austria’s Andreas Prommegger have clinched the 2012 season’s eighth parallel event of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup held in Stoneham, Quebec, Canada on Wednesday, and in doing so each has taken over the tour lead.

In Wednesday’s fog-enshrouded final Tudegesheva, the 24-year-old reigning World Cup Champion, forced the top women’s qualifier, Julia Dujmovits of Austria, to second place as she scored her first win of the season.

“I feel very good. I wasn’t pleased with the qualifiers but got better and better during the competition,” Tudegesheva said. “I’m happy about my first win in this season and also that I got the Yellow Bib,” awarded to the current World Cup leader.

Switzerland’s  Julie Zogg won third place by default after her rival, Amelie Kober of Germany, couldn’t start in the re-run of the small final due to an injury. Kober had accidentally crossed the course directly in front of Zogg, who couldn’t avoid a collision with the German racer. Kober suffered a deep one-inch laceration to her back.

On the men’s side, Prommegger celebrated his season’s second win by edging out teammate Manuel Veith by 0.11 seconds.  In the battle for third, Nevin Galmarini of Switzerland held the upper hand over Austria’s Benjamin Karl, who had remained unbeaten at Stoneham over the past four years.

“It’s amazing. I love this hill. I was doing well here over the last years but always ended up behind of Benji (Karl),” Prommegger said. “And today, our duel in the semi finals was brutal once again. This one is very important for my confidence and I also took over the World Cup lead. However, it’s more important to lead the pack after the season’s finals.”

Tudegesheva now leads the Parallel World Cup with 4,070 points, only 30 points ahead of Switzerland’s Patrizia Kummer. Kober, whose injury is not expected to force her to the sidelines, sits in third with 3,980 points. Prommegger now leads the men’s Parallel World Cup with 4,950 points ahead of Roland Fischnaller of Italy (4,690) and Karl (4,560).
