Second Victim Dies from Injuries Sustained in Alaska Avalanche

Haines, AK – A second victim buried when an avalanche swept down upon a heli-skiing group near Haines on Tuesday has died in a Seattle hospital.

Nick Dodov, 26, of Truckee, Calif., was snowboarding with the group as a client of Alaska Heliskiing when the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning on the Takhin Ridge, near mile post 33 on the Haines Highway northwest of Haines. Dodov was transported to a hospital in Seattle, Wash., where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday afternoon, according to a dispatch from Alaska State Troopers.

Alaska Heliskiing guide Robert Liberman, 35, of Telluride, Colo., was pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday. The remaining four members of the backcountry group were not buried by the slide.

Liberman and Dodov are Alaska’s first avalanche deaths this winter.
