Chamonix, France – A 57-year-old Briton slipped and fell to his death on Thursday morning while backcountry ski touring in the French Alps near Chamonix.
Paul Wenning, who reportedly lived in Les Houches in the Chamonix Valley, was crossing the classic Crochues-Berard traverse with other ski tourers when he slipped on ice and plummeted 100 feet down a steep ridge. His companions summoned rescuers, who pronounced Wenning dead at the scene.
Wenning, who was married and the father of four, is the third Briton to die while skiing in the French Alps in March. On March 28 Ed How, 37, died after falling 650 feet over cliffs in Val d’Isere, where on March 20 Thomas Lynch, 22, an employee of tour operator Crystal Ski, collided with a snowmaking gun and died.
