Mount Washington Ski Season Ends Sunday with a Splash

Comox Valley (BC), Canada – Mount Washington Alpine Resort will wrap up a snowy 2011-12 ski and snowboard season on Vancouver Island this Sunday after hosting the annual Crush Slush Cup.

“Its been another amazing year for snowfall,” explains mountain spokesperson Brent Curtain. “We’ve received over 14 meters (46 feet) of total snowfall since November which gives us our fourth snowiest season on record.”

In similar fashion to recent deep snow years, Mount Washington welcomed an earlier than expected start to the season in the first week of December. After receiving exceptional amounts of snow in late January and March, a week-long extension was added to the month of April.

“It’s hard to believe that three of our four deepest snow years have occurred in the last three years,” Curtain adds. “Mother Nature has definitely delivered the goods to skiers and boarders on Vancouver Island.”

Late season snow seekers will be treated to an entire mountain to ride over the last week of operation. Cross-country skiers will also have full use of the Raven Lodge and Nordic Centre right up through Sunday. The fun-filled Ozone Snowtubing Park will also be open daily until closing day this Sunday.

And with a season-ending base of over five meters (16 feet), the mountain has more than enough snow to build an awe-inspiring venue for this year’s Crush Slush Cup, in which costumed participants must ski, board or occasionally slide down a slope and into a freezing pit of snow-filled water.

“Our Slush Cup has always been a crowd favorite for participants and spectators alike so make sure you get there early for the best view,” says the resort’s Events Coordinator, Marina Stevenson.
