Canadians Make a Splash at Mondial AcrobatX

Lac Beauport (QC), Canada – Canadian aerialists Sabrina Guerin and Travis Gerrits rebounded from season-ending injuries in style by winning the eighth annual Mondial AcrobatX water ramp competition at the Centre National d’Entraînement Acrobatique Yves LaRoche (CNEAYL) in Lac Beauport on Sunday. They were joined on the podium by teammates Melissa Corbo and 2012 Crystal Globe winner Olivier Rochon.

Guerin wowed the 1,000-person crowd at the by performing three different triple jumps off the biggest jump at CNEAYL in the Olympic format competition. Only a handful of women in the world compete triple jumps in aerials skiing competition.

It was an extra sweet win for the Laval, Quebec native who spent the entire 2012 winter season recuperating after she tore her Achilles last November during physical testing.

“I’m really happy. I jumped well and I feel like I’m back to where I was before my injury,” said Guerin, 27, who executed a lay-tuck-full (three flips with one twist) in the final round of the competition to win with a score of 92.05. “I still have one more month of water training and then I’ll be ready for snow and I can’t wait. After this win, my confidence is really high because it means I can perform the triples in competition and I can handle the pressure. It’s good to be back.”

Russia’s Assoli Slivets also performed triple flips in the international FIS competition; she took the silver medal with a score of 84.65. In the four-woman super final Corbo, who is on the Quebec Team, performed a trick she’d only just learned this week: a full-full (two flips with two twists), and scored 82.38.

“I was really impressed, her bronze medal was well-deserved,” said Canadian Team Coach Daniel Murphy. He was also happy with Canadian Team veteran Veronika Bauer who posted a score of 78.95, good enough for fifth place in the women’s division.

On the men’s side, Gerrits, said he feels “stronger than ever” after having recuperating from surgery for a torn meniscus.

The Milton, Ontario-native upped the ante when he jumped first in the four-man super final and pulled off a nearly-perfect double-full, full, double-full (three flips with five twists) for a score of 144.00. As a result, the rest of the field had to push their limits. Gatineau’s Rochon and Red Deer, Alberta native Jonathan Vellner were forced to try tricks they’d never done before in order to match Gerrits’ five twists.  Both of them “went for it” according to Murphy, but it wasn’t enough to best their teammate. Rochon scored 119.56 for the silver and Vellner settled for fourth at 60.94. Peter Medulich was the bronze medalist at 109.39.

Freestyle ski action continues this week with the FIS World Cup Ski Slopestyle opener in Ushuaia, Argentina on Friday.
