Nashville, TN – Shaun White publicly apologized on Tuesday for a fracas at an upscale Nashville hotel that resulted in charges against the professional snowboarder for public intoxication and vandalism.
White, 26, used Facebook as his apology vehicle.
“I want to apologize for the unwise choices I made over the weekend and for any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel and their guests,” White posted on Tuesday afternoon. “I was celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.”
The Carlsbad, Calif. native issued no further comment. The athlete’s Twitter account has remained dark since earlier Sunday when he last posted from the Los Angeles area.
According to Nashville police, officers responded to the Loew’s Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday after reports that White pulled a fire alarm that caused the evacuation of all guests. An employee also said that he saw White destroy a hotel phone.
White reportedly attempted to flee the hotel in a cab but an unnamed citizen prevented the taxi from leaving, telling the driver he was calling police. When White overheard their conversation, he allegedly kicked the citizen and fled on foot. The citizen reported that he chased White until White turned and ran into him, apparently causing White to fall backwards and strike his head against a fence. White was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and his arrest photograph shows him sporting a black eye.
White was released from the hospital late Monday afternoon and is free on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges on Oct. 10. The citizen declined to prosecute White for assault.
Responding officers on Sunday reported that White appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol. Arrest warrants were issued Sunday morning, charging White with vandalism and public intoxication after he refused to sign misdemeanor citations.
White is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in snowboarding, earning gold in the halfpipe in 2006 and 2010. White has also won a medal at the Winter X Games every year since 2002. At the 2012 edition of Winter X, White became the first person in history to score a perfect 100 in the men’s Snowboard Superpipe. He has won five straight ESPY awards for Best Male Action Sport athlete. He is also a highly decorated skateboarding athlete.
