Vonn One Hundredth Off Podium in St. Anton as Maze Wins

St. Anton, Austria – Vail, Colo.’s Lindsey Vonn came ever so close to the podium on Sunday in St. Anton, finishing fourth and just a hundredth of a second out of third as Slovenia’s Tina Maze continued her total dominance on the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup with the super G win.

Maze defeated Austrian Anna Fenninger by just 0.04 seconds. Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter took the last podium spot, 0.99 seconds behind Maze, who at 29 has now joined Vonn as one of six female World Cup athletes in history to win in all five World Cup disciplines.

“I’m not really concerned about making history when I get prepared for a race, but it is always a nice thing to hear once it’s done,” Maze said. “I’ve worked hard to win my first Super G, I got very close to winning last season. I could not have made it if there wasn’t such a good team of people around me. The summer preparation was conducted in the best way possible and it’s been paying off so far.”

Vonn was pleased with the weekend after taking three weeks away from the Audi FIS World Cup to recover from an intestinal infection.

“I was a little disappointed to be one hundredth off the podium. But it was a solid performance,” said Vonn, who is now fifth in the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall standings, but more than 700 points behind Maze who is running away with the title. “It’s amazing to see (Maze) do so well. She’s been on a roll – top three in every event. She’s clearly running away with the overall. It’s cool to watch. I think it’s great for the sport and I’m really happy for her.”

Julia Mancuso, of Squaw Valley, Calif., was sixth. Bend, Ore.’s Laurenne Ross finished 17th while Stacey Cook, of Mammoth Mountain, Calif., was 25th.

“It’s nice to go fast again. We’ve had a lot of bad luck with downhill this season with not a lot of good training runs, so it’s been a while since I’ve skied fast,” said Mancuso. “I’m happy with today and I look forward to Cortina next week.”

The women’s Alpine World Cup tour now heads to Flachau, Austria for a night slalom on Tuesday before swinging south to the Dolomites of Italy for another weekend of speed racing.

I’m excited to race in Cortina,” added Vonn. “This weekend every day was better building my confidence back up. Cortina is a place where I’ve had success in the past. I think by the time I get there I’ll be in a position to get back on the podium.”
