Snowmaking Flood Damages Boyne Ski Lift

Boyne Falls, MI – A snowmaking pipe burst caused a flood at Boyne Mountain on Tuesday, and in the process knocked down a tower on one of the Michigan ski resort’s chairlifts.

The incident occurred before Boyne Mountain opened for skiers and riders on Tuesday, and no injuries were reported. The ensuing flood, sending water under 350 pounds of pressure cascading down the hill, caused substantial erosion that damaged Boyne’s Superbowl chairlift, shutting down access to 40 acres of Boyne’s terrain at the far southern end of the resort, or nearly 10 percent of the resort’s total.

Boyne officials are working with lift engineers and the state of Michigan to get the terrain and lift open again, but it’s not yet known how long that will take.
