Big Squaw Reopens

Greenville, ME – For the first time since the end of the 2010 ski season the Squaw Mountain ski area in Greenville, Maine has reopened to skiers and riders.

A local nonprofit, The Friends of Squaw Mountain, led by President and owner of Gray Ghost Camps, Amy Lane, leased the area for this season from the property owner. Businesses from all across New England have come to The Friends’ aid and last Thursday the ski area’s Donaher Triple chairlift passed its state inspection. Plans to open the mountain’s lower trails as soon as possible once sufficient snow arrives are in place, and the mountain’s bunny hill opened on Sunday for the ski area’s Mogul Mites (K-8) program.

Guests of the resort are being asked to donate as much as they can afford in exchange for a lift ticket, something The Friends decided upon to help them achieve their goal of creating a place where everyone can afford a day on the slopes. To keep things affordable for families, Mogul Mites pay just $12 for a lift ticket and a lesson, another $15 gets the student a rental from the lodge.

Operating as a nonprofit does present it’s own unique challenges and The Friends of Squaw Mountain ask that members of the public consider donating to their effort as they try to preserve this piece of New England ski history.  Visit www.skibigsquaw.com for more info about the mountain and how to donate.
