Mayrhofen, Austria – An unidentified 10-year-old British girl died on Monday after a weekend skiing accident in this Tirol region resort popular with Britons.
The victim was skiing on Sunday afternoon with her father and brother on their last run of the day when she reportedly lost control and careened off the marked piste and into a tree, local police officials indicate. Her mother had opted to ride the ski lift back down and was thus not present when the incident occurred.
The girl was airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck, where she died the following day.
“After the girl lost control, she began to gain speed. She went faster and faster and sped over the edge of the piste and into the woods,” a police spokesperson indicated. “She then hit the tree and was very badly hurt. Her father and brother were behind and they went after her immediately and saw the accident. The family gave her first aid and called the emergency services.”
The cause of death has not been released, although police indicate that the victim was unconscious at the scene and one rescuer was quoted as saying that the girl suffered head injuries. Tirol police further say that the girl was wearing a helmet.
