The ski area situated next to the eastbound shoulder of I-89 was sold to its mortgage holder for the auction’s reserve price of $848,000. It had been operated by former U.S. Ski Team mogul athlete Evan Dybvig, Dylan Goodspeed and Frank Sparrow for the past eight winters. It has been dormant twice in the past, from 1990 to 1992 and again from 2001 to 2005, when Dybvig’s group acquired the ski area and resumed operation.

The bank will now seek prospective buyers for the property. A senior vice president told the Valley News of nearby West Lebanon that the bank prefers that Whaleback would remain as an active ski area. The nonprofit Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation, whose advisory panel includes former Olympic skiers Jeff Hastings, Tim Caldwell and Tiger Shaw, has been formed to explore a possible purchase.
