S. Hastings, MN – As a Minnesota native, ski racing superstar Lindsey Vonn knows something about the passion for skiing that’s fostered at numerous small ski hills dotting the Midwestern landscape. Vonn is returning to the Midwest this week to greet fans and aspiring ski racers, sign autographs, and talk about how any of the kids in the audience can also grow their talent with hard work and dedication.
Vonn will visit both Afton Alps in St. Hastings, Minn., east of the Twin Cities, and Mt. Brighton, Mich. Both events will be open to the public with no charge for admission. Her visit to Afton Alps comes during Afton’s annual Fall Fair and Swap, Minnesota’s unofficial kick-off to the ski season. Family fun includes hay rides, chairlift rides and a ski and snowboard swap. The event at both resorts will also include other family activities and light refreshments.
Vonn represents all of Vail Resorts’ ski areas, including Afton Alps and Mt. Brighton, just added to the Vail Resorts family last winter. Known as the most decorated female ski racer in American history – and quickly gaining on “all time” status – Vonn is one of the few world-class, four-event ski racers. She is the only American woman to ever capture downhill gold at the Olympics and the only American woman with four World Cup overall titles. She has since captured a U.S. record 59 World Cup wins. In addition to her 2010 Olympic downhill gold and super G bronze, she holds five World Championship medals, including double gold in 2009.
This Friday, Oct. 4, Vonn will be at Afton Alps, located at 6600 Peller Ave. in S. Hastings. From 5 to 5:30 p.m. Vonn will visit with 50 young skiers from Afton Alps’ development teams. Following media interviews Vonn will speak to her fans on stage and sign autographs in a public event beginning at 6 p.m.
Vonn will then move on to Mt. Brighton on Saturday. The ski area is located at 4141 Bauer Road in Brighton, Mich., where Vonn will visit with 50 ski racers from Mt. Brighton’s Team XLR8 from 9 to 9:20 a.m. Again following media interviews, Vonn will speak to fans on stage and sign autographs beginning at 10 a.m.
