2014 U.S. Alpine Ski Team Named at Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain, CO – A crowd of thousands was on hand Friday as the 2014 U.S. Alpine Ski Team was introduced during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, home of the U.S Ski Team Speed Center. Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety,  Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin were on hand as 54 athletes were announced during a public celebration to kick off the start of the 2014 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup and Olympic winter.

The U.S. alpine team is coming off a record season of five World Championship medals and 33 World Cup podiums from 10 different athletes, including 18 victories.

“It’s a really cool time for American ski racers, and it’s not just because we’ve been successful the last few seasons,” Ligety explained. “Success definitely helps, but that success comes from the coaches, our technicians, our sponsors and our training partners. And when all that is working right, like it has been the last few years, it makes our job a lot of fun.”

“Right now we have a very healthy environment with this team,” Miller added. “Our coaching staff has a lot of experience and that experience is helping all of us perform. Ted is one of the best skiers in the world right now and and the girls are doing so well. When the coaches get the feeling of knowing what the success is and how to manage it, it makes for a good program to be a part of.”

The team has been training at the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center at Copper Mountain since Nov. 1. It is the only place in the world to train full-length downhill at this time of year.

“It’s not often that you have a team with so much success, especially in speed. This is a really cool time to be a part of the U.S. Ski Team,” said Vonn, who is on the road back to racing following knee surgery. “We have such a great team dynamic, better than I’ve ever seen and it’s showing in our results. Every race we have an athlete who can win.”

The Audi FIS Alpine World Cup swings through America Nov 29-Dec. 1 with a women’s downhill, super G and giant slalom followed by men’s super G, downhill and giant slalom on Dec. 6-8 at Beaver Creek, Colo. – the host resort of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.

The U.S. Olympic team for alpine ski racing will be announced on Jan. 26, 2014.
