Avon, CO – With a fresh partial tear of her right ACL, it should come as no surprise that Lindsey Vonn won’t be competing in Beaver Creek next week.
But the American ski star made that decision official on Friday when she formally withdrew from the only U.S. stop on women’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup circuit.
While recovering from surgery in February to repair a torn ACL and MCL and a fractured tibial plateau in her right knee, and attempting to return to ski racing, Vonn sustained her new injury as a result of a downhill training fall on Tuesday on the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center at Copper Mountain in Colorado. While Vonn’s rehabilitation is progressing, she is not at a point where she will be able to ski next week.
“Lindsey is recovering very quickly from abrasions to her face and contusions to her shoulder blade. Beyond that, she has a stable knee with an MRI finding of a partial tear of her ACL graft,” U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team head physician, Dr. Bill Sterett, confirmed on Friday. “With therapy, she is progressing well while not losing any of the strength she worked so hard to achieve.”
Sterett performed Vonn’s surgery in February.
Vonn, however, struck an upbeat tone in a post to her Facebook page on Friday.
“It has been a very difficult few days and your positive messages have helped tremendously,” Vonn acknowledged. “Rehab is going well and I am working as hard as I can to race in Lake Louise in a few weeks.”
The remainder of the U.S. Ski Team’s women’s speed squad, including Julia Mancuso, Stacey Cook, Leanne Smith and Laurenne Ross, will test the full length Raptor course to be used for next season’s World Championships with racing Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Beaver Creek. The event will be televised in the U.S. on NBC and NBC Sports Network.
