Calabogie (ON), Canada – An early morning fire on Sunday caused heavy damage to the snowmaking pump house at Calabogie Peaks ski resort, west of Ottawa, delaying the resort’s season opening by at least a week.

The fire broke out between 3 and 5 a.m. as snowmaking operations were underway. Resort officials are sorting out the damage and ordering parts to replace damaged components of the snowmaking system. They indicate that the planned opening this Friday is no longer possible, and it now could be as long as several weeks until the lifts start spinning.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

“We will move quickly to resume all operations,” resort officials confirmed in a statement. “Calabogie Peaks would like to thank the Township of Greater Madawaska Fire Department and all emergency responders.

“At this point, we’re not going to commit to any opening dates until we can be 100% certain and there’s still a lot of work ahead. As soon as we can, we’ll make a big fuss about it,” they added on Facebook.
