Svindal Wins Lake Louise Super G

Lake Louise (AB), Canada – Norwegian powerhouse Aksel Lund Svindal reeled in another World Cup victory on Sunday in another day of flat light and light snow at the super G in Lake Louise.

The victory was Svindal’s fifth in super G in Lake Louise, including last year when he dominated the race by nearly a full second, a margin far greater than he enjoyed on Sunday over second place finisher Matthias Mayer of Austria. Mayer’s teammate Georg Streitberger captured the bronze, 0.38 seconds behind Svindal.

“I knew that Georg was fast, I heard that on the start,” Svindal said in the finish area. “I knew it was a fast course, especially on the ‘Coaches Corner’ and ‘Fallaway’ sections. People kept making mistakes there and I could have probably done a bit better there myself. But, what is important in Lake Louise is to carry the speed down, I was mainly focused on that and on being as compact as I could in the last section,”

Despite a late start number, Travis Ganong, of Olympic Valley, Calif., turned in the best result for the U.S. Ski Team, finishing 22nd in the first men’s super G race of the 2013-14 calendar. Two-time World Cup overall champion Bode Miller, of Franconia, N.H., finished right behind Ganong in 23rd. Four-time World Cup giant slalom champion and reigning super G World Champ Ted Ligety, of Park City, Utah, was knocked off course in the difficult visibility and did not finish.

For the second straight day, the Canadian Cowboys enjoyed a better day on home snow than their American counterparts, as Jan Hudec and Manuel Osborne-Paradis are now Sochi-bound after finishing 10th and 12th, respectively, in Sunday’s super G. They join their teammate Erik Guay, who pre-qualified for Canada’s Olympic team based on his eighth-place finish in Saturday’s downhill.

Hudec, of Calgary, Alberta, was left wondering if a mistake in one section of the course cost him a shot at a podium, while Osborne-Paradis, of Vancouver, British Columbia, produced one of the runs of the day to attack from the back and jump from a starting position of 45th into 12th place.

“I got stuck with a really late start number and I knew the weather was coming in, so I just dug deep. It’s good to walk away from here with that Olympic spot,” said Osborne-Paradis, who was 28th in Saturday’s downhill. Hudec was 22nd Saturday. “Jan and I drove to the hill together today and we were like, ‘Man that sucked yesterday. I can’t believe we didn’t get that spot yesterday.’ We weren’t going to really enjoy ourselves until we had that spot . . . I’m really glad we both got in there.”

The World Cup men next head to Beaver Creek, Colo., for this weekend’s annual Audi Birds of Prey race week featuring super G, downhill and giant slalom.
