Truckee, CA – Royal Gorge will temporarily close its cross-country ski trails beginning tomorrow due to a lack of snow.
The largest Nordic ski resort in the U.S., Royal Gorge opened for skiing on Dec. 9, but a lack of natural snowfall and warm daytime temperatures have thinned the resort’s snowpack in recent weeks making it difficult to link ski trails together and groom the resort’s terrain, resort officials indicate. Trail passes have been sold at half-price since Dec. 26.
Royal Gorge will close until further notice. Resort operators plan to re-open the trails when snowstorms allow the resort to provide continuous cross-country skiing at the Donner Summit ski area.
Nearby Sugar Bowl Resort is open with top-to-bottom alpine skiing and riding on five lifts and 25 runs.
