Buy Your Own Ski Area for Under $150K

Fairfield, ID – If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own ski area, there’s now an opportunity to pick one up for less than you paid for your house.

Idaho’s Soldier Mountain, once owned and operated by actor Bruce Willis, is on the market at a no-haggle price of $149,000. That’s the amount owned by the non-profit that currently owns the resort, after it was  donated to the organization by Willis in 2012.

This is no fixer-upper, either, for aside from some minor maintenance, Soldier Mountain is ready to operate this winter. The price includes all inventory, the bar and restaurant, lifts and more — everything but the snow cats and the “Miss Belle” moving carpet lift in the beginner area. The current owners say that they simply don’t have the money to keep going.

“The price is real. This is all we owe to our bank for the last three years of improvements and operations,” members of the non-profit explain in a Facebook post announcing the sale. “As a non-profit we only sell for the debt owed against the business.”

Leaders of the non-profit indicate that they’ve received over 800 inquiries since announcing the sale. As the price is firm, this won’t result in a bidding war. Instead, the board will decide who the purchaser will be — someone who intends to keep Soldier Mountain running for the benefit of local skiers and riders.

Soldier Mountain officials were under contract to sell the ski area to the owners of Magic Mountain in Twin Falls, Idaho; however, that deal closed at the end of August, and with no funds yet transferred the board has pressed on to find another buyer.

Soldier Mountain operates under a special use permit by the U.S. Forest Service on Sawtooth National Forest land. It features two chairlifts spanning 1,400 vertical feet.
