Erzurum, Turkey – The ex-president of Turkey’s ski federation has avoided a prison sentence, but has been ordered to pay a hefty fine over the death of ski racer Aslı Nemutlu in 2012.
Nemutlu, 18, was killed in a crash while training for the Turkey Youth Ski Championship at the Konaklı ski resort near the city of Erzurum in the country’s east. The slalom and giant slalom specialist fell and slid for some distance into wooden fencing, fracturing her neck.
The former ski federation president, Özer Ayık, was intially sentenced to two and a half years in prison on what equates to involuntary manslaughter charges by the Erzurum Penal Court of First Instance, but that sentenced was reduced on Monday to TL 18,200 ($6,302).
Ayık was only one of 16 defendants in the case. Nine were acquitted, while six others were sentenced to fines.
