8-Year-Old Hospitalized After Fall from Squaw Valley Chairlift

Squaw Valley, CA – An 8-year-old girl from Los Gatos, Calif., was airlifted to a Reno hospital following a 40-foot fall from a Squaw Valley chairlift on Saturday.

The girl was with her mother riding Squaw Valley’s Big Blue Express detachable six-pack chairlift, which services beginner terrain in the resort’s Gold Coast area, when the incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, but a resort spokesperson says that the safety bar had not been lowered on the lift chair.

Squaw Valley ski patrollers responded to the girl, who was conscious at the scene, and transported her to a waiting helicopter that ferried the victim to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Her condition was not immediately available.

However, Melani Ross of Sausalito, Calif., who says that the girl dropped to the ground 10 to 20 feet in front of her, indicated on Facebook that she received a text message from the girl’s father later on Saturday, indicating that his daughter sustained fractures to her shoulder, wrist and several vertebrae.
