Golden (BC), Canada – Rescuers dangling from a helicopter plucked skiers and snowboarders from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s gondola Sunday afternoon after a major power outage disabled the lift and stranded 75 lift riders.
The incident began at around 3 p.m. on Sunday. Lift operators were unable to transfer the Golden Eagle Express Gondola to auxiliary power because the outage, caused by a transformer explosion, damaged some of the lift’s safety mechanisms.
So Kicking Horse Ski Patrol called in members of Golden Search & Rescue and Alpine Helicopters to assist with the evacuation, some of which was dramatically captured on the GoPro camera of 16-year-old Manny LaPointe, who got the ride of his young life.
All passengers were safely evacuated off the mountain by 9 p.m. and no injuries were reported. The lift has since been successfully repaired and restarted, and was loading passengers again on Tuesday.
