Wind Causes Extensive Damage to New Remarkables Base Lodge

Queenstown, New Zealand – High winds estimated in excess of 180 kph (112 mph) hurtled rocks through windows and doors of the new NZ$20 million (US$12.05 million) base lodge at The Remarkables over the weekend, causing extensive damage.

Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence estimates the damage to the new building, which just opened in June, at more than NZ$60,000 (US$36,000). More than 30 windows and doors were destroyed.

The damage was first discovered by hikers on Sunday.

Ski area officials are considering using a different material for the replacement windows and doors to prevent a recurrence.
