The release was said to have been 200 meters wide, and ran for an estimated 250 meters. Both victims were said to have been equipped with avalanche airbags, but the slide stripped the backpack from one of the victims and the other was found pinned against a tree.

La Tzoumaz is part of the “Four Valleys” ski area in the Valais Alps, which also includes the resorts of Verbier, Nendaz and Veysonnaz. In a separate incident, another avalanche struck on Friday in the Col de la Mouche at Nendaz, burying a 29-year-old Belgian man living in the region but leaving him uninjured.
