B.C. Teen Dies in Skiing Accident

Manning Park (BC), Canada – Authorities are investigating the death of Catherine Schoeman, 15, as a result of a skiing accident at Manning Park Resort in British Columbia on Saturday.

The incident occurred while Schoeman, who lived in the east-side Vancouver suburb of Abbotsford, B.C., was visiting the ski resort on Saturday with her 73-member church youth group. Schoeman’s father is the pastor of the Emmanuel Free-Reformed Church in Abbotsford.

An RCMP spokesperson indicates that the accident happened on the group’s first run of the day at around 9:30 a.m. Schoeman was at first skiing slowly, then appeared to lose control and veer off the trail into some trees. Efforts to revive Schoeman were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials at Manning Park Resort, located in the northern Cascade Mountains just north of the U.S. border at central Washington State, have only indicated that the death is not avalanche-related. The BC Coroner’s Service is investigating.
