Tignes, France – An avalanche triggered in an off-piste area of Tignes swept across a groomed blue run at the French resort on Tuesday morning, burying several victims.

The avalanche, which released from the Grand Balme sector of the resort and reached the resort’s busy intermediate Carline piste near the Tichot chairlift, struck at 9:50 a.m. local time this morning.

Police and rescue personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, and all victims were successfully located after a two-hour search. No casualties have been reported.

The incident occurred during a period of snowfall and low visibility in Tignes, inhibiting the use of helicopters to assist in the search. Avalanche conditions this morning were rated as a 4 on the European five-point scale.

This is the second avalanche to strike Tignes this winter. In February, four snowboarders died in a slide in an off-piste area of the resort.
