Fernie (BC), Canada – An avalanche struck in-bounds at Fernie Alpine Resort in southeastern British Columbia on Saturday, leaving one skier injured.nThe 2 p.m. slide in Currie Bowl measured 30 meters wide and one meter deep, and ran for approximately 300 meters. Contrary to early reports, ski area officials deny that anyone was buried in the avalanche, although one unidentified skier was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a leg injury.

B.C. avalanche authorities with the Canadian Avalanche Centre rated the danger as “high” in adjacent backcountry areas at the time. Ironically, the slide struck on the same day that Avalanche Awareness Days kicked off at Fernie.

Fernie Alpine Resort ski patrol searched the area along with the RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, Search and Rescue, one RCMP dog team, an RCMP helicopter, as well as all available resort staff and three members of the CARDA dog rescue team. No other victims were found.
