Carrabassett Valley, ME – A Maine man was rescued Wednesday night after skiing out of bounds down the backside of Sugarloaf Mountain.nCody Martel, 24, of Orono, became lost near what’s known as “Hell’s Gate” between Sugarloaf and Burnt Mountains. Once he realized that he was on the back of the mountain and unable to return to the resort, Martel contacted a friend by cell phone, who in turn reported Martel’s predicament to Sugarloaf’s ski patrol.
The Maine Warden Service as well as Kingfield and Carrabassett Valley authorities assisted in the search in chest-deep snow and temperatures that hovered in the teens. Martel, who was carrying no emergency gear, was located shortly after 11 p.m. and was evacuated by snowmobile unharmed.
It is unknown whether or not Sugarloaf, which has charged for backcountry rescues in the past, will bill Martel for the search.
