Indoor Ski Resort in New Jersey Gets State Funding to Proceed

E. Rutherford, NJ – The giant Xanadu Meadowlands project, which promised to bring indoor skiing and snowboarding to North America for the first time before construction stalled due to a lack of funding, is getting a shot in the arm from the state of New Jersey.

Garden State governor Chris Christie has approved $200 million in tax breaks for the developers of the $2 billion shopping and entertainment complex under construction in East Rutherford that will anchor the Meadowlands Sports Complex and include a 700-foot year-round indoor ski slope. The three million square-foot development, now rechristened American Dream Meadowlands, has been through several owners since breaking ground and although originally scheduled for completion two years ago, many prospective tenants have bailed out through the faltering economy. Construction has been stalled for two years.

The mall’s new developer, Canadian-based Triple Five, currently owns the country’s largest shopping mall, the Mall of America in Minnesota, as well as the even larger West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada. Christie has indicated that he wants the state to own a piece of the development in exchange for the tax reductions. The project is now anticipated to open its doors in 2014.
