Breckenridge, CO – It may be hard to believe amid the splendor and luxury of Colorado’s Summit County, but the recession has hit this ski resort region hard. Many people who were just barely making ends meet are struggling even more as the tough financial times hang on. Families with children scarcely have enough to feed them even one meal each day. These people are hard workers, who are under-employed and just scraping by. In 2009, the Rotary Club of Summit County reached out to hundreds of people who are trying to stay afloat with a free community dinner.
Fast forward a few years, and the Community Dinner remains a weekly commitment to feed the hungry. Every Tuesday, 250 to 400 people, including dozens of children, are welcomed into the Elk’s Lodge for a well-balanced, warm meal. No questions are asked at the door, and no one is turned away. When school is out of session, backpacks full of food are supplied to the children who may otherwise go hungry during the breaks. The most beautiful part is that many folks need a boost during hard times, and then come back to the dinner as a volunteer or donor once they are back on their feet.
Because Summit County receives visitors from across the globe, the Rotary Club has found a way to reach out to all our fans. As part of the fundraising effort for this special project, the Rotary Club launched www.windreamcondo.com to raffle off cash or a million-dollar luxury ski-in/ski-out condo in the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 at Breckenridge, with ticket prices starting $30. In the true spirit of a generous community, people from all over the globe are donating to the cause and helping this ski community provide for those in need.
