Lund-Svindal Wins Lake Louise Super G

Lake Louise (AB), Canada – Norway’s Askel Lund-Svindal won Sunday’s World Cup super G in Lake Louise to conclude the Lake Louise Winterstart men’s races on a day that included strong performances by members of the U.S. and Canadian ski teams.

Svindal completed the course 23 hundredths of a second ahead of the winner of Saturday’s downhill in Lake Louise, Didier Cuche of Switzerland. France’s Adrien Theaux completed the podium in third.

Franconia, N.H.’s Bode Miller led a string of five Americans into the points on Sunday with a ninth-place result. U.S. teammate Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, Calif.) was 17th, Tommy Ford (Bend, Ore.) 22nd, Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, Calif.) 28th and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) 30th. Both Weibrecht and Sullivan got back in the points this weekend after missing half of last season due to injury.

Another storming run from Jan Hudec and a determined performance from Erik Guay added up to a great day for the Canadian Alpine Ski Team in Lake Louise on Sunday. Guay, of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, bounced back from disappointment Saturday to secure a sixth-place finish despite battling wind at the top of the course. Then Hudec, starting way back in 44th, brought the crowd to their feet with a stirring run that left the Calgary, Alberta, skier fourth, just 0.1 seconds off the podium. Ben Thomsen, of Invermere, British Columbia, also picked up some World Cup points by finishing 27th.

“It was an awesome day for Canadians,” said Hudec, who won the downhill at Lake Louise in 2007 and finished 12th in the downhill in Lake Louise on Saturday. “Before I went up for my run I was watching Erik (Guay) with his dad on one of the TVs inside and he came down a second ahead. When you see something like that from a guy who struggled yesterday and came back the next day and just owned it like that, it boosts the morale of the whole team.”

The World Cup men now head to Beaver Creek, Colo., for this week’s Audi Birds of Prey World Cup.
