Austrians Dominate Snowboard World Cup Parallel Giant Slalom in Telluride

Telluride, CO – Austria’s Julia Dujmovits and Benjamin Karl won the second parallel race, and the first parallel giant slalom of the 2012 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season, held Thursday in Telluride.

Dujmovits earned her second World Cup win by finishing ahead of last year’s winner, Misty Maiden Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli of Switzerland, and Germany’s Amelie Kober.

“Back in Austria, we have only been training on glaciers and also right before this race we went for some altitude training in Crested Butte, Colo.,” Dujmovits explained. “I definitely felt better than the last years. But now, I’m really looking forward to coming down again and get some better breaths.”

In the women’s semi-final between Dujmovits and Kober, both runs ended up with a perfect tie. According to the rule book, the better qualifying time is decisive for advancing to the next round. Dujmovits was the second best qualifier, Kober third best in the time trials.

“The big final was much easier to ride than the semi final runs against Amelie (Kober). We both pushed it to the limit. There was no way for me to go any faster,” said Dujmovits. “That was the hardest duel of the day for sure.”

On the men’s side, Karl secured his career’s 13th World Cup win and the World Cup lead in a close duel with his Austrian teammate, Andreas Prommegger, with Swiss rider Simon Schoch crossing the finish line to take third.
“The final was tough,” acknowledged Karl, who defeated Prommegger by only 12 hundredths of a second. “It’s hard to be in the lead knowing that he (Andreas Prommegger) is about to catch up. I knew that this would be a tight duel. We both risked a lot in the last gates. Now, I’m the one to be hunted down again. It’s a great feeling to enter a race as World Cup leader.”
“I was pretty annoyed in the first place when I crossed the finish line knowing that it didn’t work out again against Benjamin (Karl),” admitted Prommegger. “But now I’m super happy with the second rank. It was very close, but my time will come. I will get Benji sooner or later.”
The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup continues today in Telluride with the season’s first snowboard cross.
