Val Gardena, Italy – After first lowering the start, increasing winds forced organizers to call off Saturday’s 50th annual Val Gardena World Cup men’s downhill ski race on the famed Saslong course.

After 17 racers, Canada’s Erik Guay was in fourth behind a pair of French racers, Johan Clarey and Adrien Theaux, when the decision was made. Swiss skier Patrick Kueng was in third. Organizers first imposed a 36-minute wind delay but when winds appeared to be increasing rather than decreasing, the decision was made with American Bode Miller, of Franconia, N.H., left standing in the start house.

The men’s World Cup tour now travels over the Gardena pass to nearby Alta Badia for a giant slalom race today followed by a slalom Monday.
