Maria Laach am Jauerling, Austria – Patrizia Kummer of Switzerland and Austria Andreas Prommegger won the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season’s third parallel slalom at Jauerling on Friday.
In the first Snowboard World Cup event held in the resort village in Lower Austria’s Wachau Valley, Kummer won her second World Cup in a row after her victory last week in Carezza, Italy, relegating World Cup title defender Ekaterina Tudegesheva of Russia to the second spot and assuming the World Cup lead for her first time ever. In the battle for third, Marion Kreiner of Austria defeated German race boarder Amelie Kober, who was still suffering from the aftermath of a cold.
Kummer herself just regained her health. “I was sick over Christmas and couldn’t do any physical workout or on-snow training due to this. Thus, I’m very happy that I’m still in shape,” she said. “The course was pretty flat, you had to push and work a lot to keep moving on. I noticed in the qualifications already, that I could get it all again. I just needed to bring everything together, especially the transition from straight to turning lines.
“The World Cup lead is awesome,” Kummer added, “but I will take it race after race.”
In the women’s hunt for the crystal globe, Kummer has amassed 2,640 points, the same as her teammate Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli who sits in second with one less win.
On the mens side, Prommegger secured the home win in front of 5,000 fans watching the night finals. The 31-year-old from the Salzburg area nailed his first ever win on home snow by beating Russia’s Andrey Sobolev in the finals. Roland Fischnaller of Italy placed third ahead of Slovenian rider Rok Flander.
“I never was on the podium at home soil World Cups before. I just finished fourth once in Bad Gastein,” Prommegger explained. “Winning in front of such an audience is crazy. I never experienced anything like this. I had goose skin in every single run. The crowd was carrying me down. This triumph is unbelievable.
“It just worked out fine for me. I felt better with every run although the conditions were getting worse.”
Local hero and 2011 Double World Champion Benjamin Karl defended his men’s World Cup lead with 3,570 total points, even after being eliminated in the quarter finals.
