Top Athletes Battle It Out in Dew Tour Superpipe and Slopestyle at Killington

Killington, VT – Vermont’s Killington Resort this past weekend hosted the 2011-12 Winter Dew Tour, the largest on-snow event in the East, with superpipe and slopestyle competitions at Bear Mountain in front of 32,000 fans, a 10% increase from last year’s event.

On Saturday afternoon, snowboarders threw down their best in the slopestyle finals and the competition continued into the night with the freeskier superpipe finals in an under-the-lights aerial battle. The action concluded on Sunday with showdowns in the freeskiers’ slopestyle finals and men’s snowboard superpipe finals with top Tour rankings and Dew Cup bragging rights on the line.

Saturday kicked off with men’s snowboard slopestyle finals where Eric Willet, out of Breckenridge, Colo., took first place with a stellar run putting him in third for the Dew Cup standings heading into the final stop at Snowbasin in Utah.

The ladies took the stage next as they dropped into the superpipe finals with Maddie Bowman from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., bringing amplitude and style that carried her to the top podium. The night concluded under the lights where Torin Yater-Wallace won his first pro event and became the youngest Winter Dew Tour event winner ever at age 16.

On Sunday morning, women freeskiers started the competition with slopestyle finals where after bouncing back from a fall in the first round, Montreal native Kaya Turski took first, edging out Vermonter Devin Logan. Turski now leads the race for the Dew Cup.

“I just tried to keep it calm after I had a mistake on my first run,” Turski acknowledged. “At the top I was thinking that I had to keep my speed right and think it through feature by feature; and not dwell on the first run.”

Men’s freeski competition was topped off by Tom Wallisch achieving the highest ever Winter Dew Tour score in slopestyle. He heads into the Dew Tour Toyota Championships at Snowbasin in first place.

The Tour concluded late Sunday afternoon in a suspenseful battle as Switzerland’s Iouri “I-Pod” Podladtchikov upset Sandy, Utah’s Louie Vito, the reigning Dew Cup Champion in the superpipe, in the last two runs of the event. I-Pod now holds first place with a two point lead over Vito as they prepare for the final stop in Utah.

“We’re thrilled to host the only East Coast stop of the Winter Dew Tour for the second year in a row,” stated Chris Nyberg, president and general manager for Killington Resort, “It was incredible to watch these world-class athletes battle it out. This was an extraordinary event that brings the Killington community together and is enjoyed by our guests.”

Notably absent from the competition was Canadian freeskier Sarah Burke, who died last week of injuries sustained in a crash while training earlier this month in the superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort in Utah. Women’s freeski slopestyle winner Turski competed with an “Believe in Sarah forever” sticker on her ski, and said she feels like her friend will be with her for the rest of her ski career.

“I know she would have wanted me to compete and do my best, so I went and did what I could today,” Turski said. “I’m just thinking about her family and wishing the best for them.”
