Hendrickson, Van Finish Top Three

Hinzenbach, Austria – American ski jumpers Sarah Hendrickson and Lindsey Van, both of Park City, Utah, battled challenging winds for a second straight day on Sunday to take second and third place in front of large crowds in Hinzenbach as Austrian Daniela Iraschko completed a weekend sweep with the win, coming from fourth after the first jump.

Van soared 90.5 meters on her first jump to move into second with Hendrickson’s 86.5 good for third. Hendrickson went 90.5 on her second jump to move up a spot, while Iraschko came up from fourth with the longest ride of the day at 91.5 meters.

“Congratulations to Daniela and Sarah and to the organizers in Hinzenbach. The crowd was great and that gave me a good feeling to compete here,” said Van. “Today felt like some of the best jumps I’ve had all season. There are some small changes I can make and I always want to get better but I’m pretty happy. It’s great to see people come out and support women’s ski jumping and for Daniela to win in her home country.”

“I’m very pleased with my results this weekend even though I wasn’t as satisfied with my jumping technically. I know I can do better,” added Hendrickson. “I’m trying to stay focused. I’ve had a lot of fun ski jumping, more than ever in the past, and that is helping me put up good results.”

“The wind played a bit of a role in the competitions this weekend, but today (Sunday) was very fair. The competition was really tight to be in the top 10,” said Paolo Bernardi, U.S. Visa Team international coach. “Today the top three athletes were definitely the strongest.”

Hendrickson retained her overall World Cup lead of 116 points over Iraschko, with Van moving into third.

“I’m aiming for the overall World Cup title and that is still very possible if I can keep jumping at this level,” she said. “We have six more comps and I have to stay strong. Daniela had awesome jumps this weekend and is giving me a run for my money.”

The women’s World Cup ski jumping circuit now heads to Ljubno, Slovenia this weekend.
