Winter Park, CO – Authorities in Colorado are considering filing criminal charges against a snowboarder who ventured out of bounds at Mary Jane ski area on Tuesday before calling rescuers for help when he became lost.
The unidentified man, 20, of nearby Tabernash, ducked a boundary rope with a companion near Winter Park’s Panoramic Express lift on Tuesday afternoon, and upon finding himself disoriented contacted Grand County Search and Rescue officials around 2:30 p.m. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office was able to ping the snowboarder’s cell phone to lock onto GPS coordinates and notified Winter Park Ski Patrol, members of which located the man. He was able to ride out under his own power and was cold but otherwise unharmed. The other snowboarder involved had earlier made it back to safety without assistance.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has withheld the victim’s name and that of his companion, pending possible criminal charges against both snowboarders.
