The as-yet-unnamed 29-year-old victim was skiing off-piste in Austria’s central Salzburg province near Neukirchen am Grossvenediger with his brother and friend when the avalanche occurred. He was wearing an avalanche beacon. News reports indicate that the man was twice resuscitated en route to the hospital in Zell am See, where he was pronounced dead.

A large number of avalanches in the region hampered the progress of rescuers in locating the victim.

The accident occurred on the same weekend that an avalanche buried Prince Johan Friso of The Netherlands in the Austrian ski resort of Lech. Friso still clings to life in an Innsbruck hospital.
