St. François Longchamp, France – Mangled wreckage is all that remains of the base terminal of the Lauzière chairlift in the French ski resort of St. François Longchamp, southwest of Chamonix, after it was struck by an avalanche on Friday afternoon.
It took authorities roughly two hours to evacuate the lift’s 30 passengers. No injuries were reported.
Officials on Friday had rated the avalanche danger in the area at 3 to 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. The damaged chairlift will not reopen this season.
