Weibrecht Qualifies for World Cup Finals

Kvitfjell, Norway – Olympic bronze medalist Andrew Weibrecht, of Lake Placid, N.Y., rallied a bib-one start into a trip to the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Finals on Sunday after finishing 23rd in the Kvitfjell super G. It was a Norwegian 1-2 finish as Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal took the top two spots as Swiss ski racer Beat Feuz was third.

Only the top 25 racers in each discipline qualify for the March 11-18 finals to be held in Schladming, Austria. Weibrecht matched his Sunday finish in the standings: 23rd. Svindal leads the World Cup super G standings by 42 points over Swiss veteran Didier Cuche with only the Finals race remaining. Feuz leads the overall standings by 115 points.

The men’s World Cup alpine tour now moves to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia for a giant slalom and slalom this weekend, where Park City, Utah’s Ted Ligetywill return to action after skipping Kvitfjell to train in Soelden, Austria for both events.

Canada’s Erik Guay and Jan Hudec won’t compete in Kranjska Gora, and instead have set their sights on getting back on the podium at the World Cup Finals after their regular season wrapped up Sunday with respective 9th- and 19th-place finishes. The duo left Kvitfjell feeling disappointed after claiming top-three finishes at each of the previous four World Cup stops.

“It’s easy to get all bummed out about today or the last couple of days,” said Hudec, of Calgary, Alberta. “At the same time, I got World Cup points at every single (speed) race I’ve been in this year. I’m happy about that and feel good physically. I want to have a result that will help me forget about these races here.”
