Willis, whose Soldier Mountain Development company owns and operates the ski area on National Forest land, has reportedly met with Camas County officials and told them of his interest in transferring the ski area to a non-profit organization newly formed of Fairfield area locals, the Soldier Mountain Recreation Area (SMRA). The 1,150-acre, 1,425 vertical-foot ski area is said to have operated at a financial loss for a number of years.

A public meeting to discuss the future of Soldier Mountain, including progress updates from the SMRA Action Committee, information on Association Membership obligations, benefits and volunteer opportunities, followed by a question and answer session, will be held at 6 p.m. this evening at the American Legion Hall in Fairfield. SMRA officials hope to find enough donors, new members and sponsors who can take over operation of the ski area.
