Whitefish, MT –The United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA) has named its roster for the 2012-2013 U.S. Telemark National and Development teams. Telemark racers from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club fill many of the spots on the U.S. Telemark National and Development teams, but there are also four racers from New Hampshire this season following a strong showing by racers from New England at the 2012 National Championships.
Zoe Taylor of Atlanta, Ga., and Steamboat Springs, Colo., returns to the squad’s A team this year after being named the 2012 U.S. National Champion and winning the World Cup Parallel Sprint Classic race last season at the tour’s 2012 stop in her home town. Madi McKinstry, 18, the 2011 National Champion who also hails from Steamboat Springs, had great success at the World Cup level as well last season with two third-place finishes in the Classic event and a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in the Classic event. McKinstry plans to spend the winter in Europe racing on the World Cup circuit following classes at Montana State University in the fall.
Veteran racer and 2012 National Champion, 49-year-old Charlie Dresen of Steamboat Springs, returns to lead the men’s A Team this winter. This will be Dresen’s fourth year of competition in recent years, but he was also a U.S. team member from 1999-2002. Joining him will be: Cory Snyder of Franconia, N.H.; Jeffrey Gay of Steamboat Springs; Birk Larsen of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Tommy Gogolen of Breckenridge, Colo. For the second year in a row, Gogolen is recovering from knee surgery and spending hours in rehab so that he can compete this next season.
Maggie Doherty, of Whitefish, Mont., is returning to the B team this season after suffering an injury last year. She will be juggling a new job and a Master’s degree program in writing with her passion for telemark ski racing this season. Joining Doherty on the B team is newcomer Sarah Carley of Brentwood, N.H., who turned in an outstanding performance to capture second place at the 2012 National Championships. Returning to the B team for the men are Josh Lanzetta of Rye, N.H., and Andy Minier of Eden, N.Y. Joining them are Tanner Visnick of Steamboat Springs, who moved up from the Development team, as well as Chris Henery of McCall, Idaho and Cole Schneider of Whitefish, who moved up from the Regional team after many years of dedication to the sport.
The Development team, created for competitors aged 17 and under, has three members this season that include Lyta Foulk and Jack Rosenthal from Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Dylan Weglarz from Durham, N.H.
The U.S. National team athletes will compete in regional, national and World Cup Telemark events this coming winter. Dates for regional races and the National Championships have yet to be determined.
