A total of 10 searchers on Monday night discontinued efforts to locate the pair, believed to be from beyond the Otago region, due to fog and worsening weather. They were located about an hour after search efforts resumed on Tuesday morning, according to the Omarama police.

The pair were spotted cresting a ridge at the top of the mountain and heading out of bounds. After ski area employees reported the two missing at 4:30 p.m., a couple of mountain rescue personnel, who were assisting a fogged-in helicopter at nearby Ben Ohau accompanied by avalanche rescue dogs, transferred to Ohau Snow Fields and began the search effort.

The lost skiers were reported to be cold after spending an unplanned night outdoors, but were otherwise unharmed.
