Liberec, Czech Republic – A team of 35 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association athletes are competing this week in the International Ski Federation Junior Nordic World Ski Championships and U23 (under 23) World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic Jan. 21-27.
Athletes are competing in cross country, nordic combined and ski jumping. Liberec, located north of Prague, was the site of the 2011 FIS Nordic Ski World Championships.
The team blends a significant number of newcomers along with veterans like ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson, of Park City, Utah, who will be making her fifth appearance at Junior Worlds with both a silver and bronze medal from past Championships.
“Sarah Hendrickson is looking for another medal and going into the Junior Worlds in increasingly better shape. Looking back to her World Cup victory last weekend in Hinterzarten she’s ready to fight for the gold,” said Paolo Bernardi, head coach for Women’s Ski Jumping USA. “Nina Lussi is having some good jumps in training and I’m looking for a top 20 from her. Emilee Anderson will have her first start at Worlds and she’s there to learn and to gain experience for the future. Manon Maurer is also looking forward to her first start and she did a great job qualifying and she’s there with the same goal as Emilee.”
“Last year, we had a young team, however that has paid off in experience this year with 14 of the 22 cross country skiers with former Junior World Ski Championship competition experience. This group all knows each other and has formed into a tight-knit team. They have been training together and pushing one another,” added Bryan Fish, U.S. cross country coach. “Our U23 team is led by athletes Sophie Caldwell, Erik Bjornsen and Skyler Davis. All three competed in the Liberec World Cup a week ago and remained in Liberec to prepare.”
