Tignes, France – The French ski resort of Tignes experienced its second mishap of the young ski season on Saturday when a mechanical failure of a T-bar lift injured six of the lift’s riders.

The left of the resort’s two side-by-side Rosolin T-bars on the Grand Motte Glacier derailed just before noon on Saturday, sending the heavy lift cable crashing down onto helpless riders below. French police report that six passengers riding the T-bar were injured, including one 15-year-old girl who was airlifted to an area hospital.

Investigators were on the scene on Sunday trying to determine the cause for the derailment. It’s not the first time the Rosolin T-bar’s cable derailed, as a similar incident occurred in 2012. A dozen people were injured in that earlier derailment, which was blamed on a rider outside of the track pulling the cable off the sheaves.

Saturday’s lift accident comes a week to the day after Tignes opened for the ski season and an avalanche swept onto open terrain, partially burying several guests.
